Anomalies and RR Couplings for D-branes and O-planes.

The appeareance of gauge and gravitational anomalies in string vacua with D-branes and O-planes is discussed. We show how these anomalies are cancelled by the presence of certain anomalous couplings of branes and orientifolds to the gauge and gravitational background. Subsequently, specific string vacua, called IIB orientifolds, in six and four dimensions are considered. We compute the anomalous couplings and discuss in more detail their implications at the level of the low-energy effective action.
