Spacetime-Filling Branes and Strings with Sixteen Supercharges

We discuss branes whose worldvolume dimension equals the target spacetime dimension, i.e. branes with codimension zero. We call them ``spacetime-filling branes''. Their existence is suggested by the central charge structure of the supersymmetry algebras. The worldvolume actions of these branes are constructed, via duality, from the known actions of branes with codimension larger than zero. These worldvolume actions suggest a relationship between spacetime--filling branes and strings with sixteen supercharges. We provide further evidence for this relationship by investigating the orbifolding/orientifolding of IIA and IIB string theories.
