DESCRIPTION:Today\, 25 November 2022\, within the context of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women\, the Institute of Theoretical Physics (IFT)\, represented by its EDI committee\, ratifies the statement promoted by ISGlobal and the Global Health and Research community\, and gives its unconditional support to the women and girls of Iran in their rightful and peaceful fight for their rights. \n\n\n\nWe strongly condemn the violence and humiliations against the women and girls and the extreme violence and repression that the demonstrators have faced recently during rallies. \n\n\n\nThe full text of the statement and the supporting institutions can be found here.

Para conmemorar el 25N\, Día Internacional para la Eliminación de la Violencia contra las Mujeres\, hemos preparado una mesa redonda con la autora para analizar la repercusión de su libro. Trataremos del impacto que ha tenido en los medios y en el ámbito académico\, en la adopción de medidas correctoras y sobre las perspectivas de futuro para atajar este problema. SUMMARY:LGBTIAQ+ in STEM Day
DESCRIPTION:It is critical to raise awareness about LGBTIAQ+ people in STEM and create more safer\, inclusive spaces in academia. \n\n\n\nA 2013 survey of STEM workers found that more than 40% of LGBTIAQ+ identified respondents working in STEM fields are not out to their colleagues. A 2014 study of STEM faculty at universities found that 69.2% of ‘out’ faculty members felt uncomfortable in their university department\, and that those who were out were 7.2 times more likely to experience exclusionary behavior by colleagues. A 2018 study found that undergraduate sexual minority students were 7% less likely to be retained in STEM compared to switching into a non-STEM program\, and 14% less likely to stay in a STEM major if they have had a research experience.Sources for the studies available at: https://500queerscientists.com/resources/

SUMMARY:October 26th - Intersex Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:All over the world\, newborns are subjected to reassignment surgeries and hormone treatments in a desperate attempt to fit their appearance into the canons and prejudices established by modern society. These procedures are carried out\, in most cases\, without the consent of the person themselves\, which represents a gross violation of human rights. On the other hand\, their parents are exposed to strong medical pressure to give their consent for such treatments and surgeries\, without being fully aware of the negative repercussions (probably irreversible) that these procedures may have.  \n\n\n\nThis problem is widespread worldwide\, and very few countries have taken strong actions to curb this kind of practice. More than 1 percent of the world’s population is born with intersex characteristics\, and their human rights are worth as much as those of any other person. That is why this October 26th\, we at IFT commit to Intersex Awareness Day\, claiming the inviolability of their physical and mental integrity\, as well as their protection against discrimination based on sexual characteristics. \n\n\n\nWe have prepared a leaflet with a list of 26 positive attitudes\, compiled by InterACT\,  that an ally of intersex people can take\, and we invite you to review it. They cannot fight alone\, and they should not. \n\n\n\nOctober 26th\, because intersex rights are human rights.

SUMMARY:"El universo violento (y oscuro) a la luz de los rayos gamma"\, por M. A. Sánchez-Conde
DESCRIPTION:Los enormes avances producidos en la astrofísica de altas energías a lo largo de los últimos años han desvelado un inesperado y furioso ‘bestiario’ cósmico lleno de sorpresas: insaciables agujeros negros súper masivos morando en el centro de casi todas las galaxias\, colosales explosiones de estrellas con decenas de veces la masa de nuestro Sol\, estrellas de neutrones actuando como viudas negras en sistemas estelares dobles… Esta revolución ha sido posibles gracias a potentes telescopios de rayos gamma situados tanto en órbita como en tierra\, por ejemplo Fermi-LAT y MAGIC. Por si fuera poco\, los rayos gamma pueden ser la clave para descifrar uno de los mayores desafíos de la ciencia contemporánea: la naturaleza de la enigmática materia oscura\, que se cree compone más del 80% del contenido de materia en el Universo y de la que sin embargo aún desconocemos casi todo. SUMMARY:Una Noche de Ciencia en el CSIC
DESCRIPTION:La Noche de los Investigadores e Investigadoras es una celebración europea en la que la ciencia se pone al alcance de la ciudadanía con diversas actividades culturales. Un año más\, los centros del CSIC del campus de Cantoblanco (UAM) se unen para participar de forma conjunta en esta iniciativa\, con dos eventos en los que se presentarán\, de manera cercana y participativa\, investigaciones en ciencia de materiales\, física teórica\, matemáticas\, ciencia de los alimentos\, biología\, nanociencia o cooperación en ciencia. \n\n\n\nEl viernes 30 de septiembre se celebra Una Noche de Ciencia en el CSIC\, que incluirá\, a lo largo de todo el día\, talleres científicos\, encuentros con investigadores e investigadoras y la yincana. Todo ello tendrá lugar en la sede central del CSIC (Calle Serrano 117\, Madrid).  Por la mañana se ofrecerán demostraciones científicas para centros educativos de Primaria\, ESO y Bachillerato\, adaptados a la edad de los grupos asistentes\, que también podrán realizar la yincana. La tarde será para público general y familiar\, con un extenso programa en el que se unirán charlas y encuentros con personal científico que explicará sus proyectos de investigación.

As a result of the riots\, an international LGBTIAQ+ rights movement was born. \n\n\n\nThe UAM-CSIC Institute of Theoretical Physics joins the celebration of LGBTIAQ+ Pride on June 28\, 2022\, proclaiming that inclusive science is the only way forward. \n\n\n\nIFT adheres to the principles of nondiscrimination and gender equality. We encourage people from traditionally underrepresented groups to participate in our institution. Theoretical physics must be developed by all the different types of people that make up our society.

DESCRIPTION:Irene Valenzuela Agüí\, Ramón y Cajal researcher at IFT\, receives the Young Researcher Award in Theoretical Physics from the Spanish Royal Physics Society (RSEF) – BBVA Foundation\, for “the high impact of her contributions in the study of the instabilities of non-supersymmetric models of string theory and their implications in Cosmology and Particle Physics. Her trajectory and her research results in international centers of excellence are a reference in the field of quantum gravity and string theory ”.  \n\n\n\nThe video contains the speech pronounced by Irene Valenzuela during the prize-giving ceremony that took place on December 14\, 2021. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhat makes me happier about this award is that it is an opportunity to bring this field of research close to the general public\, to communicate the emotion I feel for Theoretical Physics\, and to encourage everyone interested to read more on the subject. What matters is feeding that little worm that we all have inside\, which pushes us to ask questions and be curious\, and be critical with the answers we receive. After all\, that is Science. DESCRIPTION:November 18 is the International day of LGTBIQA+ people in STEM. The date is symbolic of the anniversary of American Astronomer and gay activist Frank Kameny’s US Supreme Court fight against workplace discrimination\, a fight that continues today worldwide.  This day has been selected to highlight the work and barriers of LGBTIQA+ people in science\, technology\, engineering\, and maths (STEM).  \n\n\n\nToday\, we subscribe all that this day represents: to make visible the affective-sexual and gender diversity in these fields and to manifest our categorical rejection to the discrimination suffered by people from this group in general and in particular in STEM areas. \n\n\n\nHere you can find 10 PRISMA measures for the equality of LGTBIQA+ people in Research Centers\, of the PRISMA association for affective-sexual and gender diversity in Science\, Technology and Innovation. \n\n\n\nWe also invite you to enjoy the talk “El sexo de los ángeles: huyendo del concepto binario del sexo biológico” at the University of Valencia\, given by Daniel Ruiz Gabarre\, member of the Equality working group of the SO CBM (part of the Comisión Intercentros CSIC+UAM) and to consult the UN campaign Free & Equal – United Nations on Intersex Awareness.

DESCRIPTION:El Segundo Encuentro de Grupos de Igualdad de centros CSIC\, organizado por el Instituto de Física Teórica (IFT UAM-CSIC)\, en coordinación con la Comisión Delegada de Igualdad y la Comisión Mujeres y Ciencia del CSIC\, tendrá lugar el día 17 de noviembre de 2021 en el Salón de Actos del Centro de Física Teórica y Matemáticas (CFTMAT)\, localizado en el Campus de Excelencia UAM+CSIC en Madrid. \n\n\n\nEste encuentro se enmarca dentro de las actividades dirigidas a potenciar la Red de Grupos de Igualdad del CSIC\, creada a raíz de la celebración del primer encuentro organizado por el Instituto de Ciencias del Mar el año pasado. SUMMARY:Results of the socio-economic survey at IFT
DESCRIPTION:On April 2021 the IFT EDI committee launched an anonymous survey among permanent and non-permanent IFT researchers and PhD students to gauge how inequalities and other factors may affect the chances of reaching a doctorate level. The survey aimed to collect data concerning the cultural and socio-economic background of IFT members and draw an image of the impact of the socio-economic context in attaining the first steps required for a successful career in Academia. \n\n\n\nThe participation rate in the survey reached 54% .
